“I remember this day very well. It was awesome. We were at the front of the boats all day, so close that the spray from the barrel would hose us down.
We would take shots quickly, put our cameras in their waterproof cases and within seconds a wind would come and literally ‘blow your hat off’. Earlier a boat load of Tahitians got swamped and were rescued by the water patrol along with a photographer on a jet ski who was caught out of position and went over the falls losing all his camera gear in the process.
Near the close of an epic session we decided to go around the back for a different view. Moments later a giant set came through and this one wave was so big and thick it forced the water patrol to move the boats clear of the ‘Impact Zone’ and into safety.” |
